I just dusted off a SBR to test this (not had one plugged in for months!!) and found that it didn't work for me either. A few minutes troubleshooting later, I found it was the firewall on my workstation that was blocking broadcast traffic (I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 on this particular machine). So, check your firewall. Try turning it off completely, just to make sure discovery works. If it does, you can then work out how to configure your firewall to allow traffic on port 17784, including broadcasts.
