something similar that's executed automatically after each reboot ?

I actually had some thought a few weeks ago to make an applet which
would make it possible to select among a number of different patches and
automatically apply these after a firmware upgrade. I'm just a bit
scared that it would cause reboot loops if something goes wrong so I
haven't dared to implement it yet.

Does the /root directory and everything within it survive a firmware
upgrade ?
