I think this is a problem I will run into.

I used to manage my tags with 'MP3ext'
(http://www.mutschler.de/mp3ext/) which unconditionally writes both
id3v1 and id3v2. Then I started using iTunes which only updates the
id3v2 tags, leaving existing id3v1 tags unchanged. Now I have a huge
amount of MP3 files where id3v1 and id3v2 contain differing information.
In particular, I usually blank out TALB in iTunes unless I have the
complete album, so that single tracks go into the "Unknown Album"
(iTunes) or "No Album" (SBS) section. If the scanner now recovers the
album title from the old id3v1 tag, I will again get a jumble of
complete and incomplete albums in the album list.

In the long term I plan to remove the id3v1 tags from my collection,
but I am a bit reluctant to load 17000+ tracks into mp3tag all at once
and hit the delete button. So it would be nice if reading id3v1 could be
made optional.
