apologies for delay in response, I've been travelling, and recognise this might not get seen. I don't think I phrased case 3 clearly enough: I only put one "Various - ####" AlbumArtist tag on any compilation album, for the purpose of controlling the sorting when viewing albums by artist. For all other purposes I use multiple genre tags, as you suggest. i.e. it is not 'providing granularity' as I said but 'enabling sorting in the album by artist view'.
