in my exp, it is not a placebo effect. i noticed a big difference both
in faster scanning, and responsiveness. i mean, there is no question
in my mind that artwork loaded faster in the webui, clicks were quickly
responded to, etc.

a third option where mem allocation equals DB size sounds good to me,
(i'm for it) but just like the option Andy already put in, its only
good if your system can handle it. a lot of people are using low power
low spec boxes these days, and even NAS type users would benefit from
tweaking the settings to fit their system specs... in other words, the
moonbase/andyg option, or what you propose, may be good for lots of
people, but may be counter productive for some. an auto-tuner would be
good for EVERYONE and take into account minor differences.

for instance, a sparc NAS unit is essentially slow as molasses, but
even it can have differing amounts of RAM. the auto-tuner could set
the NAS to best settings knowing that.

given how reliant the SBS exp is on DB performance, whether MySQL or
SQLite, i think there is a lot of benefit to trying to maximize those
settings for any given hardware in an install.

btw...

since moonbase did his last revision, i have seen lots of suggestions
about lines to add, things to tweak, and so on from Jim and others.
maybe i will try to gather all these suggestions and put them into one
place, so that a better implementation of moonbases idea can be done.
