AMG (allmusic) and Gracenote (CDDB) are two of the biggest ones and they both certainly do [fill out the composer tag on rips/autotag via big apps like WMP and winamp]; and i assume itunes/apple does as well. FreeDB seems to be the extent of your experience. i love EAC and freedb, but its limited and not nearly as big a player as the top 3 i just mentioned. they also fill out the Publisher tag. the only time they don't fill out these tags, is when they don't have the info in the db, or the app doesn't support it. but the big apps (as above) do. i find that almost everything in my popular music gets something in the composer tag, prob 90% or so. it does make sense to check it like any other tag, as its not always accurate.
