Just trying to make it a bit clearer (or not) with an example:

What you may know as Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons is his most famous
work.
This work consists of four violin concertos, that are themselves part
of a bigger 12 concertos ensemble, known as Vivaldi's opus #8.
Each concerto is made of several movements, which will most often be
used as the base for tracks on a CD.

Now, this Vivaldi's work will be played by one or more orchestra(s) and
soloist(s) managed by one conductor, at some place and at some time, and
will be recorded.
This is what you may call a version of the work, and classical music
lovers will often own several versions of the same work.

Another weird thing with classical records is that it's not uncommon to
have several works by one or several different composers on a single
CD.

Say you own several versions of Vivaldi's Four Seasons in you music
library, you want to listen to one.
You may want to listen to one version conducted by Andrea Marcon, or
another one conducted by Herbert Von Karajan.
If you chose Von Karajan, do you want to listen to the version where he
conducted Michel Schwalbe, or to the one where conducted Anne-Sophie
Mutter?

You may also want to select a soloist first, chose a
composer/conductor/orchestra next, etc.

I don't even tell you it's possible that the same orchestra, conductor
and soloist(s) may have played the same work, the same year, at
different venues, and these versions have been recorded.

Browsing classical music has nothing to do with the way you browse
popular music. To be efficient, it has to be flexible.
