I have now right clicked on squeezesvc.exe -> properties ->
compatibility -> ticked "run this program as administrator"

Now Squeezebox Control Panel works correctly as you described. When I
change this setting I see it ask for permission now.

Are you supposed to be setting that in the installer? Or do you
explicitly request admin rights in the app or when control panel
launches it? Something is wrong :p

Regarding people not reading, I think people would definitely notice
the note after they try and it fails miserably for no apparent reason.
:)

Also please do make it more clear when squeezebox is an application or
service.
I assume "Dont start automatically" and "automatically run at login"
are "application", where as "automatically run at system startup" is
"service".
If there is limitations like "your files wont add after using the
browse button if running as a service".

In that big blank section in the Library tab, if running as a
service(and maybe even some more intelligence about if a network drive
is being referenced incorrectly) you should make it show something
like:

Note: Squeezebox is currently running as a Windows Service. Mapped
network drives must be referenced by their UNC name to work. eg:
\\server\folder not Z:\folder
