I earlier did a small test with my 3500 track library in the same
virtual environment using the same SBS:
- Real library (91 GB): full rescan 92 seconds
- flactruncate.pl library (31 MB): full rescan 32 seconds
- My random generated flac library (15 MB): full rescan 25 seconds
(Files stored on a QNAP NAS accessed via NFS over gigabit network)
So with this small library, the test library was about 3-4 times faster
than a real FLAC library with real large files.
If I remember correctly, the scanner doesn't read the whole FLAC file,
but it's still affected by the I/O. When I've performed the scanning
with the 50 0000 tracks test library it also feels like everything
works very fast up to 20-30 000 tracks but then it slows down a bit,
not sure if this is memory related or a general behavior in all setup.
So it might be possible to use the test library to see the best
possible scanning performance, but probably not to get an indication of
a realistic scanning performance.
However, it should be possible to use the test library to measure
browsing performance. But when measuring browsing performance it's
important to realize that there are some server side caching going on
both of rescaled artwork but also for some of the database queries. So
to get a realistic measurement, you might want to measure both the
first access and the second access of a specific menu.
If we want to do something as a community effort, I think the first
step would be to specify which tests we should run and register results
from.
