My install was of RC2 over 7.6 on WinXP when I had this identical 
problem.  But now that Michael mentions it, I do remember installing an 
early version of 7.7 a couple of weeks ago - and I see from my downloads 
that it was version 33429 of September 13th.

That version of 7.7 didn't work at all, and I ended up having to use a 
Windows restore point to get 7.6 working again, but as Phil notes, 
perhaps there were still some remnants of 7.7 when I installed RC2.

I've found that Windows Restore on WinXP doesn't always clean up 100%.
