I also get the scanning hanging, running nightly r33555. I've had it hang on scanning news files, scanning updated files, and on artwork. The number just stays on 0, with nothing in the logs. Sometimes a restart and rescan gets it further, but it always hangs on artwork, with nothing in the logs.
