Double-checked. I see no scanner.exe launched (I'm running from SqueezeSvr.exe). I see SqueezeSvr.exe go to 50% CPU during the new & changed scan (uses most of one core of the dual-core CPU).
Thanks! There might be a difference in how internal vs. external scans deal with artwork, as I haven't seen this problem recently. Importer plugins cause the scanner to run in a separate task.
