Any thoughts yet to enabling fewer of the included plugins in a new
install, as has been recently suggested? Personally, I don't think any

I'm surprised you're bringing this up again, as I wouldn't expect you to install from scratch that often? But it's a good point.

of the music service plugins should be enabled, as they're so dependent
upon location.

This imho is a reasonable idea. The issue I'm seeing though and which needs some thought is how to not let the user in the dark when he installs an app for which he doesn't have the plugin enabled. By default this would cause the player to switch to mysb.com when that service is accessed. That's probably not what the user wants in many cases. Therefore we should have some means to tell him to enable the plugin (or offer to do so for him).

The only issue I see is people doing clean installs who may expect
certain plugins to be enabled based on past experience.

Not only those with past experience. Even an unexperienced user would probably expect a newly installed app to just work without having to go to settings/plugins to try to figure out what plugin he needs to enable.
