I would do anything in this area in small incremental improvements.

I think to start with, create a new "Browse Compilations" mode.  This would 
show only albums that are tagged as compilations; should be fairly easy (Browse 
Compilations being equivalent of going to Browse Artists > Various Artists).  
Leave everything else as it is, so nothing is broken.

Once this browse mode is accepted, can consider removing the special "Various 
Artists" entry that always appears at top of the artist list, so each artist 
(or album artist) appears in the list in alphabetical order.  This second phase 
should simplify a lot of code, and provide a performance improvement.

It won't break/fix people's tagging philosophy - what gets detected as a 
compilation.  That's the bit that's likely to cause distress, if changed ;-)
