Those options only appear when you select "Single, configurable list of
artists" in My Music settings. Doing so will kick off a full rescan.

Many thanks (the full rescan is indeed an important hint for it takes
many hours in my > 400.000 tracks collection.

That's something I'd like to address in 7.9: no scan should be triggered automatically. A flag should be set and the user be told to launch the scan. But don't start it until the user confirms the action. This would allow to change several prefs which require a rescan without running multiple rescans. But it's on my todo list, and I probably won't get back to it before... August :-).

So before I do: Could any of You explain in short words, how this mode
works= Or is it documented anyway?

There are currently two efforts going on wrt. to browsing:

- the improved contributor handling
- some backend (and demo) code to build virtual libraries

What is being discussed in this thread is the improved contributor browsing. In the past there was a somewhat configurable "Artists" menu. This would contain a list of artists of various roles (according to the configuration in Settings/My Music).

In 7.9 I added a second mode which would provide two browse modes: Album Artists and All Artists. The first would for most users be more or less the same as the old Artists view: a list of primary artists, but not all of the contributors (eg. no conductors, composers etc.), but basically the name printed on the disc sleeve.

The All Artists mode otoh would list them all. Whether primary artist or composer.

You can select in Settings/My Music whether you want to have the old, configurable view, or the new mode with the two menus.

Till now I thought it would be some kind of "fan mode" if You wanna see
only some of Your favourite Bands.

This rather sounds like the second feature, the multi library support. It allows you to get a filtered view on your music collection. Without rescanning you could eg. tell LMS to only show music of a certain genre, music by a given set of artists, kids music only, one hit wonders, only FLAC files except if there's only a lossy version of a track, and what not. The possibilities are only limited by the dev's fantasy (and capabilities ;-)).

The code in LMS is mostly infrastructure for 3rd party devs to implement the real filtering. There is a _demo_ plugin which does provide a few sample views. But it's mostly supposed to be my test vehicle to validate the backend code. And some sample code for the 3rd party devs to learn from.

In which way is this list "configurable"? Do I have to chose single
artists (I've got 63.000 in my collection so it would not be from any
use ;-)) or in which way can I "chose"?

You could easily create custom menus with the music from only a sub set of your artists. But it's not end-user configurable yet. You'd have to write your own SQL to do this. Or wait for some dev to come up with a user front end.
