Thanks for the tip, Mnyb.  People like me who rarely get into the
workings of Linux struggle with 'mounting'.  So Google came to the
rescue and I can now find the unscanned music files on my Windows
machine from LMS on the VortexBox.  In case it will help others, I
logged into the VortexBox as root with CryptoTerm and mounted the
windows share with this command:

mount -t cifs -o username=guest,password="" //123.456.1.7/Musictemp
/mnt/Musictemp  

I could then list the music files that are on the Windows PC and are not
in the LMS library.  

And to make the mount persistent so that it will be there next time the
VortexBox boots I used nano to edit /etc/fstab to include this line:  

//123.456.1.7/Musictemp /mnt/Musictemp smbfs
username=guest,password="" 0 0  

And I think it took me between three and four hours to reach the point
where I can listen to unscanned music....  A bit of a mission but some
more learning achieved, hopefully.
