I have also been trying to get my DSF files to play directly. I had been
converting to DOP as described in your link, but when LMS 7.9 became
available for my DS1813+, I dug into how to play my library without
having to do the conversion. I found a few problems with the Synology
(ARM?) version of LMS, though. The DSDplayer plugin, although showing to
be available, didn't work (I note in the nightly LMS 7.9 builds that DSD
support only works for some platforms). Another more obscure problem
came up - I found 176.4 khz files wouldn't play properly on my Benchmark
DAC2. Something gets goofed up with timing, and once I try playing that
sample rate, the Benchmark won't decode other files with other sample
rates until I disconnect/reconnect the USB cable. Strangely, my iDAC
nano has not trouble playing those files from the NAS LMS.

So, I installed LMS 7.9 on a Windows computer, enabled the DSDplayer
plugin, checked the "Enable DSD-over-PCM" box for all my players, and
pointed that LMS to the NAS for its media folders. Voila! Now I can play
DSF files on my NAS through the LMS on my Windows computer with my
Squeezebox Touch and various DACs without having to convert. I can also
play 176.4 khz PCM files this way. It requires an extra device in the
playing chain, but you need that device anyway to convert to DOP
format.

And, yes, it does sound lovely! I'm quite happy to use this set up until
the ARM version is working properly.

Cheers,
