The rabbit hole goes deeper than that. Borer (pun intended) scheduled an event in the same hotel that Wallace does his yearly. Apparently the influx of events has caused the hotel to suspend breakfast during the course of Essen, and will prevent several gaming opportunities for Wallace and his friends.
