Race is one of my favorite games because it's got just enough strategy
for a short game. Part of its appeal is you can kind of roleplay as
you're going--"I need more mercenaries [play mercs] so that I can
conquer X world [play world]." That's certainly turned off my girl
friend from playing, who like your wife, enjoys PR and a few other
lighter games.

We've discussed the symbols, but it just doesn't click. She'd rather
play gin.

PR can be a door to RFTG because they share a similar mechanic in
choosing roles, but like I've said, it's been a hard sell for my gf.
On the other hand, if she's open, once you know the symbols the game
plays real fast. The decisions are simpler than PR imo, and akin to
playing gin rummy in a lot of ways (looking for outs, remembering what
you discard, etc). I really only have one person to play with, but
when we do it's a blast.

All said, I would still buy it if I were in your position .
