Your 8-year old might like Loot better, but Cartagena is good and pretty simple. Cartagena 2 is a little more complex. Just a wee bit, in that there's the boat in the middle. It doesn't feel like a card game. She might need your help through the first few turns, but she should pick up on it fairly quickly. And it's pretty short, so she shouldn't get bored.
