given your examples:  If their corners meet they are diagonally
placed, if two of the sides meet they are orthogonally placed. In fact
orthogonal lines are perpendicular by definition.

for a grid:
x|o|x
o|a|o
x|o|x

The areas marked "o" would be orthogonal to the area marked "a".
