Your guess is correct.  Changing it from fixed to relative is a rather  
significant change, since it then generates a path relative to  
the .bib file.  I'm not sure why the preview displays a tilde in that  
case, though, since ~ implies a fully specified path.

So on reconsideration, your reasoned belief is that we have "harmful"  
defaults?  Ouch :).  See what you get for assuming?
