You could deal with this particular situation in a straightforward way  
by adding the "Read" checkbox column to the main display. Then you  
could sort in your bowdoin static group folder on that column to  
separate the list into unread and read populations if you needed to.  
Alternatively, you could use the "Read" column and also keyword for  
bowdoin, which would be easy within a static folder by using one of  
the existing keywording Applescripts either manually or with a  
trigger, and then setting up your smart folder based on the bowdoin  
keyword and the "Read" column contents.
