First of all, you're not supposed to work this way anymore. Just add the URL
directly in the side pane. You can use the contextual menu or the menu from
the little gear icon at the bottom to do that. Otherwise you can drag and
drop the string from the field to the side pane.

Also, fields are not automatically converted to attachments when there
already are attachments, it's only done once to help you get migrated to the
new system.
