I was thinking of coloring the whole row background with an arbitrary  
color. Even more compelling because nobody knows what the selection  
color is. The examples you mention are more exceptions (indeed, Apple  
often doesn't follow it's own design rules) and moreover it's very  
limited. In Mail I only can find a custom background color for  
threads. I never use Finder labels, so I wasn't even aware that they  
color rows like this.

What I'm also weary about is when this would be added, the next  
request will be to customize these colors. And then we lose control  
over UI design and get added feature bloat. I hate these chained  
request, and I know they will come. Somewhere a line should be drawn  
of course. My personally opinion is (and was) that it's here, but you  
may differ.
