IIRC TeX4ht wasn't updated in TeX Live as rapidly as Eitan Gurari updated it. Since he passed away, I'm not sure who will be maintaining it.
There doesn't seem to be a Mac-packaged version of TexLive 2009 yet - can I just install the "unix" version of the 2009 preview on my mac?
Yes, you can install the standard Unix version on your Mac. Be advised that /usr/texbin will still be set up to point to TL2008, so you have to adjust it or use the full path to TL 2009. It's still in flux, though, so I'd be careful...
