You can grab the icon from the title bar of the Preview/ Skim window -
that way you get to the file wherever it is (you dont have to worry if
it's a temporary folder) - and drag it directly to the entry in
bibdesk. (You can do this from any Mac application, also right
clicking on the icon in the title bar shows its location in the
filesystem). It will then autofile from wherever it was originally.

So that skips steps 5 and 6.
