Thank you Glenn for the suggestions. I tried a) and b) and neither of them 
worked as I would like and gave the same result as my Command-V method.

Your suggestion of "Generate Cite Key" (keyboard shortcut Command-K) worked 
nicely though! I will use that in the future.
