I have a Waterford 1400 Mountain Bike, which I purchased new in August of
'95; in '99, I replaced the original Syncros Handlebar/Stem combo with Nitto
Dirtdrops and a custom Salsa stem (26mm clamp, 130mm length, and (I believe)
a +53 degree rise). A SRAM Gripshift gave way to Shimano barends, and the
XTR V-brakes were exchanged with a DiaCompe canti system; also, my WTB
racing saddle was replaced with a Brooks B17 Champion, and the Ritchey SPD
pedals with some Campy quills and toe clips. To finish, I added a Carradice
Nelson Longflap to complete my idea of the perfect "back to school" bike.
Seven years later, I'm back to the drawing board.

I've decided to change the handlebar yet again, this time to a Nitto
Albatross (I'll keep the stem and shifters), but now I'm having trouble
deciding on grips: I'd like to use the new ones from Brooks, but I'm unsure
if I can use my barend shifters with them. I'm waiting for an answer from
Brooks about the size of the hole in the end cap (the leather piece is
removable, but does anyone have these grips? If so, could you measure it for
me? I'm guessing I'll need about 20mm to properly insert the shifter. If I
can't, I suppose I'll either do the cork thing (but I'm not a big fan, to
tell you the truth), or just use tape. Another option would be to mount the
shifters using Paul Thumbies, but that's another story!

Can someone help? I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick:
Have you considered Ergon grips for the Albatross bars? Basically, they are
shaped for better weight distribution across your hands. They slip onto the
bars and a small allen fitting keeps them in place. I've used them in the
past with Jitensha Nitto bars and they worked incredibly well. I will put
them on my Albatross bars as soon as the gorilla glue fails and the cork
grips fall off again. Just saying ...

Here's a link to the grips from a big box store's site so you can see what I
am talking about:
