To the Editor: I agree with the Daily News that its time for a change of leadership in the Fairmount Park Commission. The Commission's lack of vision is exemplified in their decision to partially open the West River Drive to motor vehicles on weekend afternoons. The entire West River Drive closes during certain times on the weekends between April and October for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. Thanks to pressure initiated by a local Talk Radio personality, a decision was made by the Fairmount Park Commission to open the lower 1.4 miles of the West River Drive to motor vehicles. This "compromise" has made this section particularly dangerous for non-motorized users. Cyclist, pedestrians and skaters are forced onto a poorly maintained 6' sidewalk or faced against the peril of speeding motorists on a shoulderless highway. The most dangerous time is at 12pm sharp, when cars are unleashed on the roadway while families are still strolling on the lower part of the drive. This is a dangerous situation and it is time that the Park Commission take a hard look at this rule, before a child's life is lost. The best solution is to give the park back to the people and close the entire length of the West River Drive from 7am to 5pm. ---- You are receiving this because you are subscribed to the Bicycle Coalition of the Delaware Valley list named "bike."
