I got this email on Monday looking for reasons to bike in the winter. If
you want to contribute any you can reply to Jennifer or send them to me
and I'll forward them. Here are some more that I made up yesterday:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# 173: Instant cash "rebates" for winter bikers at convience stores.
Just leave your facemask on and warm one hand in a jacket pocket to
qualify.
# 856: Adding pepermint schnapps to your water bottles will prevent them
from freezing.
# 912: An inch or so of new snow will make an old junker ride as smooth
as any fancy full suspension model.
# 493: Riding in the cold will NOT cause drowsiness.
# 275: Bike paths are way less crowded.
# 608: Sliding on ice is fun.

Title: why ride in winter?
Hello
Dave,
My name is
Jennifer Marlow. I'm the editorial intern at ORION magazine, and want
to propose to the editors that ORION do a short feature in its Sacred
and Mundane department on winter riding.
If you
don't know ORION, check out our website:
www.oriononline.org.
Basically,
I saw your list of reasons why to winter ride on Madison, Wisconsin's
Bicycling Commuters Page, and wanted to read more:
http://danenet.wicip.org/bcp/commute.html.
Here are
the few that I came across:
# 76: You
can carry your bike to the top of a slippery hill. Try that with your
car.
# 12: No worries about sunburn, heat exhaustion or insect bites.
# 112: You never have to scrape the windshield on your bike.
# 361: You can stand your bike up without a stand by just sticking the
wheels into the snow.
# 482: You
don't need to leave furniture so no else parks their bike in your
spot.
The
website said you have a thousand good reasons. Would you be willing to
share more of these with us? Your humor and novelty are fun and
wonderful; it's the spirit we're looking for. Rather than publish tips
on what gear to buy, or when to put the studs on the bike tires, we'd
be more interested to promote winter biking in the spirit you seem to
approach it.
I'm
proposing this for the Jan/Febuary issue, but deadlines are soon
approaching (next week), so if you're interested in sharing more of
these good reasons to bike in the winter, we'd appreciate hearing from
you as soon as possible.
Best,
Jennifer
Marlow
