That's fine but my point is that the city has a safety problem at this
intersection that requires investigation.  Not only have there been
accidents at that location, but I have witnessed other close calls there
as well.  

This is more than a traffic calming situation.  Drivers of motor vehicles
are supposed to stop at crosswalks when members of the nonmotoring public
are in the process of attempting to cross a street.  Since they seldom do
that at this intersection (or some do and some don't - which is even
worse in my opinion because there is inconsistency), stop signs are
needed.

My of the people that use the bike path are also kids going to school or
with parents.  If they see a car coming from the right stopping for them,
they figure a car coming from the left will stop as well.  Then they act
surprised when the one of the left continues to barrel on through.  I've
seen this happen several times. It's not a safe situation, for kids
especially.
