Second Bicyclist Dies in Dane County in a Month

The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin is very saddened by another motor vehicle related crash death.  The death of Jessica Bullen marks the second life lost in the time span of a month in Dane County. Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin executive director Marjorie Ward stated, “Bicycling is a safe and healthy activity. Both motorists and bicyclists have to follow the rules of the road and be cautious. Jessica was an experienced bicyclist who was dedicating her life to planning better communities.  We owe it to her to take this moment to think about how to make Dane County a safe place for everyone, not just for cars.” Jessica Bullen, a girlfriend, daughter, sister, and member of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin died on July 3rd from injuries she stained in a crash with a motor vehicle on June 30th.

On June 9th a 33-year-old woman was killed near Marquette Street in Madison in a crash with a delivery van.   Sunday night another bicyclist was in a crash in Sun Prairie.  The details of this incident are still unclear.  The number of bicycle fatalities in Wisconsin in 2005 now stands at six, compared to four at this same time last year.

The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin works to educate the public, both cyclist and motorists, on how to use our roads safely through classes, events, and publications as well as working to improve facilities for bicyclists all over the state.

The cycling community will be joining a celebration of Jessica’s life at 7:30pm on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at Giddings Park (on Lake Mendota at the end of Brearly Street).  In addition, an informal memorial ride will begin at 5:30pm on Friday July 8th at the capital square at the corner of State Street.  The ride will proceed around downtown to remember those pedestrians and bicyclists who have died recently AND to celebrate biking and walking.

Jessica’s family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin to help make Wisconsin a better place to bicycle.  You can contribute at www.bfw.org or by calling 608-251-4456.
