Mike, It is my understanding that the University is not expanding it's parking, or planning to. It is replacing surface parking (on which buildings are being built) with structured parking. I base this on presentations I've heard as a member of the Joint (City and UW) Campus SE area committee.

Actually, even if UW is increasing the absolute number of parking spaces, it is still decreasing their number relative to the amount of jobs there, or space in buildings, or whatever other measure you want to use to determine likely demand for spaces.

Coupled with their other incentives (free bus passes to all students and employees, e.g.), I think that the UW is headed in the right direction, even if they're perhaps not moving as quickly as some of us would like them to. But we should acknowledge (and even applaud) any plans that help create the paradigm shift we want to see.
