The following recommendations advanced by Alder Tim Gruber would make
accommodating pedestrians, bicyclists and bus riders a priority for the
Hilldale and Midvale Boulevard redevelopment areas. The two projects -
both of which are located on Midvale Blvd. and within about 1 miles of
each other - should not be considered complete until these
recommendations are fully implemented.

Subject: Pedestrian, Bike and Bus issues around Hilldale
Dear Mayor Dave, Staff and others:
As we implement the Comprehensive Plan, and promote New Urbanism, Smart
Growth, high-density urban in-fill development, Transit Oriented
Development, and the Fit City, I believe that it is important to make
accommodating pedestrians, bicyclists, and bus riders a priority in our
planning. I have several specific recommendations regarding the Hilldale
area. Please consider these ideas, take them or leave them. If you take
them, take credit for them as examples of your brilliant thinking. (I
can't take credit for most of them, they came from other people) If you
leave them, please tell me why and/or offer some alternative suggestions.
Thank you.
WALK
1. Improve the pedestrian crossings at University Ave and Segoe Rd and at
University Ave and Midvale Blvd.
2. Create a new signalized intersection on University Ave between Segoe
and Midvale with a well designed crosswalk.
3. Signals at Frey St and Segoe Rd, and/or at Sheboygan and Segoe,
Heather Crest and Segoe for safer pedestrian crossing.
4. Wide sidewalks in and around Hilldale.
5. Raised crosswalks within Hilldale.
6. Higher fines and more enforcement for drivers not yielding to
pedestrians and for drivers speeding.
BIKE
1. Bike paths in and around Hilldale.
2. Bike rental at the proposed hotel at Hilldale. (imagine visitors
renting a bike at Hilldale, and riding to Picnic Point or the Union
Terrace, State St, Overture, Monona Terrace, etc with the
aid of the GPS directions on their cell phone)
3. Remove parking on Midvale Blvd from the Beltline to University Ave and
create bike lanes there.
4. Make the right lanes of University Ave from Campus Dr to Segoe Rd into
bus/bike/right turn only lanes.
5. Improve safety at the SW bike path crossings.
BUS
1. Make the right lanes of University Ave from Campus Dr to Segoe Rd into
bus/bike/right turn only lanes.
2. More/better bus shelters.
3. Indoor bus shelter/waiting area in proposed Whole Foods at Hilldale.
4. Bus information center where people can buy discounted bus passes and
get real time information on bus schedules.
Thanks for considering these ideas.
