Just to be clear, I am in total agreement with Eric regarding defensive riding. Classes offered by Bicycle Federation and the League of American Bicyclists teach riding in a lane position that allows a bicyclist plenty of space to maneuver if there are hazards in your path. In some cases, a bicyclist and a motorist can safely share the lane - for instance on a city street where the outside lane is 15 feet or more. It's like having a bike lane, but there's no stripe. On rural roads where there is a generous shoulder, bicyclists can also easily be passed at a safe distance by motorized traffic without the motorist needing to cross the center line.

However, there are also plenty of roads - both urban and rural, where it is not safe for a motorist to pass without crossing the center line. In that case, we recommend riding in the right 1/3 of the lane. This allows plenty of space to maneuver around obstacles, and signals to the driver that s/he will need to cross the center line to pass. Just as with any other traffic on the road, the driver needs to wait until there is no oncoming traffic to pass.

As to why Eric has not seen ads on TV or heard them on the radio, it really is cost. I didn't say that ads were currently being run in this market, so i can believe that Eric has not seen or heard them. However, they are run in some media markets, and Bicycle Federation will be running them on local TV in the future.
