What Matt said is a great example.

I'm not saying that drivers are evil for not paying attention...and I get the
tragedy of going to jail for a careless mistake is slightly different than
going to jail for something done with intent. All I'm saying that we need a way
to make drivers pay MORE attention.

But maybe Matt is right...maybe the typical motorist doesn't have the
experience to "see" potential crash situations. I totally agree that being a
bicyclist has made me more aware of traffic rules and of potential crash
situations. Or rather, being a VEHICULAR bicyclist has made me more aware
(there are plenty of people out there bicycling on the roads who have no clue
what they are doing).

But even with the experience as a bicyclist, I am still far more likely to
make a careless mistake while driving than while biking.

Maybe it is because you are really aware when you are on your bike of how
vulnerable that you are. In a car, it is easy to get lulled into a state of
unawareness. On a bike you are also connected more closely to what is going on
around you.

This makes me think that it is even more important to do a pre-drivers ed class
for middle school students. If you teach future drivers to think like a
bicyclist before they learn to think like a motorist, maybe there is some
chance that they will be more aware when they get behind the wheel of a car.
