Mitch,

Excellent ideas on State street light timing, I'll bring it up at City
Downtown Committee Meet Thursday. Not only are the lights ridiculously long
(yes, the car ruling the road....but its not really incentivizing use of public
transit, alternate modes etc...by disincentivizing those who do and making it
easier on the cars) but the Bus Drivers get, perhaps somewhat
understandably...based upon how silly some folks cycle
irresponsibly..."touchy"...it appears only a matter of time before someone gets
run over.

Thanks also for forwarding the trail story blog link...yes, brown jacket was
not a good call...at least she left her antler helmet at home...good move there!

  Troy Thiel, Madison
ps good news in the budget about increased bike parking funding...spoke with
Alder Clear about it...sounds like Platinum Committee work is wrapping up well
too!

On some streets in Denmark and the Netherlands, the traffic lights are
timed at an easy pace for bikers (about 18 km/h, apparently), and little
green lights along the curb indicate the speed that will allow bikers to
travel without stopping.

We probably won't see "green wave" lights in Madison, but I think it might
be worthwhile to time the signals on some streets for bikes' convenience.

For example-- how are the signals timed on State Street and the Capitol
Square? When I ride on those streets, I usually hit a red light at every
corner. Through traffic is prohibited or discouraged on those streets;
why not set the signals to favor bikes? That would be the platinum thing
to do, I think.
