I agree with Jeff that we need to do more to get more bicyclists to use
lights at night. I want to first note that if half of the bicyclists he
saw that night had lights, that's progress. I have observed the number
of bicyclists using lights grow over the years. Another important point
of contact for educating bicyclists is local bike shops. Anyone
bringing a bike in for service, purchasing accessories or a new bike
should be asked if they have lights. Lights should be displayed
prominently in the shops, so that anyone walkng into a bike shop can't
help but notice them and hopefully think, "yeah, I need a light".
