Before you all get yer knickers in a snit, I would
strongly recommend that you all reread that letter to
the editor once again and be cognisant of the context
of that letter.
First of all, it is a letter to the editor, or, at
most, an opinion/editorial ("op-ed" for those in the
biz) submission. ALWAYS, take letters and op-ed
submissions with a grain of salt. They seldom, if
ever, truly reflect the official editorial position of
that paper or any other paper that publishes them. And
I can bet the Journal Sentinel was NOT paid to run
that. They probably ran that to prove they are willing
to print divergent viewpoints just to show they can.
It is not an editorial endorsement
If anything, let be a lesson that not all people
really "get" the issue and often go off in tangents,
however sincere and well-meaning they may be. It also
shows where we have to direct our arguments and how to
frame them in order to make our message clear. At the
very least, those letters to the editor can be amusing
if they aren't so scary in their careless use of
attribution. My guess is the editorial page editor
probably shook his/her head like everybody else. I've
worked at several newspapers. Letters like that come
in all the time.
