Dear Group,

There has never been any mounted opposition to road salt. Sure, a bit
of static, but not only the "powers to be" and "powers of the people"
have loved the stuff since WWII. I railed against it in high school and
found nobody concerned. In the mid 1970s I found that street salt was
not used West of Minnesota. In 1974, I drove to Seattle at Christmas
and found the roads quite driveable with basic plowing and distribution
of a small amount of sand and gravel. Sure those who love salt say
dumping sand and gravel has a down side. But I didn't slide off the
road in my round trip. Another Christmas in those years, I talked to a
Minneapolis bus drive in the club car on the train and he explained that
city streets were much worse just after the salt is spread. Even his
heavy bus was prone to slide easily.

So, what is the love affair with salt? On the news last night----IT WAS
TOLD THAT MILWAUKEE HAD ALREADY SPREAD 80 THOUSANDS TONS OF STREET SALT!

What do you ecological types on this site think about the "salt
institution?" I doubt whether the argument that all cars would collide
without it holds water in light of the number of police reported
collisions reported just TODAY.

Of course since "all groups" of people love salt, my words make no
difference. And, hey, don't the auto body shop guys deserve a business
which will not migrate to China?
