If you have some old tires around and can spare the price of 100-sheet metal 
screws, you can build your own studded tires. I put a couple of these together 
for about $10 and have been using them, when necessary, for at least 5-winters. 
I splurged and bought stainless steel screws for durability. 

I finally pulled these tires out on Monday and have been happily and recklessly 
pedaling across the icy patches all week.
