Doug,
Speaking for myself only, but suspecting that you & I are not alone, YES! I agree on the stop sign = yield sign for bikes issue. A yield is much more appropriate for a low-speed, momentum-based technology such as the bike.

But please understand, if you want to see something like this happen, you need to take a leadership role on it. The work load in the bike advocacy arena has simply got to get spread around to more people. Basically everyone who has been and is heavily involved in the bike advocacy thing is already overburdened. If you want to see more good stuff happen for bikes, we need more leaders. It has to get beyond the usual suspects.

You might try working with your own alder to get some ordinance language worked up on the topic of stop=yield for bikes. Then, get a news release worked up and/or possibly a sample letter for people on this list to send to their alders to create more political momentum for it. Maybe aim for a target date for everyone to send their letter at the same time. Round up some folks to help further strategize at a local coffee shop. Etc.

Anyway, I think you get the point about stepping up if you want to see more good stuff happen for bikes. Thanks for pushing the idea!

Dar, great piece, I always appreciate your kinder gentler approach - the reminders help keep me from getting myself killed being self-righteous and indignant. Stop signs seem to be a recurring theme in any discussion about cars vs. bikes. It seems to me that allowing bicycles to treat stop signs as yields (like some other states do) would go a long way towards reducing anti-bike attitudes. Stop sign running isn't likely to end anytime soon no matter how much it's preached, so why not take away the excuse it gives drivers to be anti-bike? Not to mention making biking more efficient and pleasant. I mentioned the idea on this list before and it was met with resounding silence. So am I the only one who thinks bicyclists should push for a law like this in Wisconsin? What's the downside? Apart from the difficulty of getting such a law passed of course. Anyone? Hello?
