If we are going to pursue issues like this, why not try to make it so
cyclists can treat stop LIGHTS like stop SIGNS as well. I know I am
a scofflaw for doing so, but if there is no traffic coming I will
often blow red lights. I always stop, but if I can see the way is
clear it is pointless to wait out the whole light sequence. I would
never blow light in my car, but on the bike I have a much better
awareness of your surroundings. Also, I smaller and more maneuverable
on the bike so if I somehow got in someone's way it would be easier to
avoid an accident. And of course there are some lights that won't
switch for a bicycle and if there are no cars waiting where you are
waiting you have no choice but to blow the light or continue to sit
and wait until a car shows up.
This might be pushing the boundaries too far, but I say we propose it
ask for it, and then if the officials don't like it we can drop it as
a concession.

"Prodded by advertising hype and mistaken notions of neatness and
order, [people] expend great effort and money to make expansive lawns
look like putting greens and clutter their yards with sterile,
ornamental exotics which offer so little in stability and interest now
