Jeff beat me to it, but I was going to suggest the same route, which
is indeed marked on the city bike map, and is one of the cemetery
roads. It's really quite an interesting ride, since you pass the grave
markers of many prominent Madisonians. You will recognize the names of
streets and UW buildings on those grave markers.

I'm embarrassed to say that I lived in the neighborhood just to the
north for several years, and rode my bike the entire time, before I
discovered this route. Before my discovery, to access Glenway and then
the Arboretuem (the SW Path had not been built), I rode on Speedway.
Not pleasant, but it worked. One day I looked at the map and said,
"What's this route marked here next to Speedway?"

Shows that even those who think they know all the shortcuts can still
learn something.
