But we do have! It's called a mirror. From my rustiest winter-beater to my old 
English 3-speed to my go-fast (well, not so much in my case...) roadie, EVERY 
one of my bikes has a mirror. 'Course, I wouldn't expect every pedestrian on 
the paths to have a mirror. And I'm sure that's why peds are more often 
surprised by passing bikes on the paths than bikes are surprised by passing 
cars on the road. But that's all the more reason, as a pedestrian on a path, to 
look over your shoulder now and then.

I'd be scared bleep-less to ride on the street without a mirror.
