Ah, but the topic was making eye contact... much harder using mirrors. Tho I
certainly agree with you in all other aspects. Unless they make an effort not
to be, bikes are also quieter coming up on peds then cars are to bikes... and
bikers know they are going to lose, whereas, if the bike runs into a ped...
it's the bikers fault, at least according to the popular stereotype. Any wonder
we're so paranoid (at least the smart ones)?

Should'a seen me on my single-speed Schwinn playing leap-frog with the buses
all the way down Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee way back when tho. (Anyone
around that is familiar with "the alternate site"?) I think I probably worried
more then just one driver. But it was fun and I was young and it was a nice
gentle downhill slope to the lake. And downtown a bike can usually move faster
then cars. Wheeee...

But we do have! It's called a mirror. From my rustiest winter-beater to my old
English 3-speed to my go-fast (well, not so much in my case...) roadie, EVERY
one of my bikes has a mirror. 'Course, I wouldn't expect every pedestrian on
the paths to have a mirror. And I'm sure that's why peds are more often
surprised by passing bikes on the paths than bikes are surprised by passing
cars on the road. But that's all the more reason, as a pedestrian on a path, to
look over your shoulder now and then.

I'd be scared bleep-less to ride on the street without a mirror.
