A bike club stalwart in the Chico, CA, area (near where my parents live)
was rendered immobile, maybe for life, when he collided with a bollard
on a bike path at night.

There are lots of bollards on campus, especially at the Kohl Center, and
some near the east entrance to Camp Randall off Dayton Street.

Illuminating these in some way or making them reflective could prevent
the (rare?) collision, and reduce the liability exposure to the public
and other property owners. It's really cheap to put some reflectors or
reflective paint on them that can be illuminated by a bike light. The
reflective portions of street signs, runners' shoes, helmets, bike bags,
etc., reflect my feeble front light from at least 200 feet away.

On Friday, December 21st, [2007] Ed McLaughlin -- long time cycling
coordinator for Chico Velo, bicycling advocate, and all around nice
guy-- was riding with a group of riders through Bidwell Park and ran
head on into a bollard (those metal posts intended to keep cars from
driving on the bike path.) Ed was wearing his helmet but suffered a
severe spinal cord injury in the fall.
He was airflighted later than day from Enloe Hospital in Chico to a
medical center in Santa Clara that specializes in spinal injuries. There
is a story in the Chico ER that has more information about the Ed's
condition. www.chicoer.com/news/ci_7790433
Check back here and we will update his progress as we learn it. We are
working to create a foundation where donations can be made. Again,
please check back here for information.
