I just ran across this bill which passed the house last week:

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:h.r.6532:

The House (including an "aye" from our own Tammy Baldwin) agreed to take
$8,017,000,000 (or about $26 per U.S. citizen) of your tax dollars in
order to cover the decrease in gax tax revenue due a reduction in
driving caused by high gas prices.

The bill was recieved in the Senate on July 24th and has now been
referred to the Committee on Finance.

The Bush Administration has signaled it will veto this bill (though the
House vote was 387-37 in favor - totally veto proof) and prefers that
money be transferred out of the mass transit fund to cover the
shortfall.

All this while we are getting reports of less driving and safer roads.
Why do we need to cover the shortfall at all? High gas prices, which
are predicted to go on for another year, have created an environement
where highway improvements are less important. Polls suggest that
Americans are going to stick to their new transportation choices and
continue driving less, even if gas prices drop.

It is time to give your legislators some grief over this one!

Unfortunately, there are no Wisconsin senators on the Committee on
Finance.

I have already sent my view on the matter to Tammy Baldwin. I would
urge you to contact your elected representatives as well.
