This bill isn't about maintenance. It is about expansion. And I'm not talking bridge joints.

For an example, take a look at Madison's latest budget: Highway expansions galore, and much of it is federally funded.

When I see the expansions stop, I'll believe the rhetoric about the need for repair $$.

For years the chorus on this list has been: Fix it first.

For years we have been ignored.

For years, expansions have been rubber stamped. (Even by a conspicuous elected member of this choir.)

And for years the city has not been able to keep up with the maintenance, thanks to the overbuilding of big, wide, fast, sprawl-inducing highways.

The two who burned their rubber stamps and stood against the pavement expansion projects of He-who-shan't-be-named, the Lord of the Asphalt, the Alpha-Male-Who-Gets-Prime-Choice-At-Budget-Kills got pitched from their appointed commission spots.

For what?

Standing against His pavement.

So if you are serious about repair funds, and safety of bridges, I would suggest following Matt Logan's advice and holding your elected officials' feet to the fire (all of them, at all levels of government, from St. Tammy and St. Russ, all the way down to the Holy Progressive Caucus on the city council--yes, even *all* of the isthmus alders!) to ensure that there are no further funds for road expansions. None. As it stands now, they obviously can't even keep up with what they've got.

For not even the Almighty Lord of the Asphalt seems to be able to control the dark forces of--[HIDE YOUR FACES LEST THEY BE BURNED BY ITS POWER!]--Entropyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

All this while we are getting reports of less driving and safer roads.
Why do we need to cover the shortfall at all?

One word: bridges. While WI may not have a bridge problem (and that's a big may... flooding can cause bridge damage), many East Coast states have a serious bridge problem.
